Welcome to the Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance at Nazarbayev University School of Medicine!
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most serious threats to global health. In response to this challenge, World AMR Awareness Week (18–24 November) is held annually — a global campaign aimed at raising awareness and understanding of the issue through effective communication, education, and cross-sectoral collaboration.
In support of these efforts, the conference “Antimicrobial Stewardship to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance: A One Health Perspective” will take place in Astana on 19–20 November 2026, organized by the National Center for Public Health, the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office in Kazakhstan, and the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC).
The conference will bring together experts, researchers, and representatives of the healthcare and veterinary sectors to discuss key issues in antimicrobial resistance, including antimicrobial stewardship, the One Health approach, surveillance, infection prevention and control, as well as policy and practice. The program includes plenary sessions, regional experience from Central Asian countries, and expert panel discussions.
On November 18, 2026, before the conference, a series of practical workshops will be held, covering antimicrobial stewardship, infection control, microbiology, and scientific publication preparation.
We invite healthcare and veterinary professionals, researchers, academia, partner organizations and government representatives to join the discussion and exchange experience to advance effective solutions in the fight against antimicrobial resistance.

Keynote International Speakers
Guidelines for Abstract Submission
The work must be presented by the first (presenting) author.
- Length: 250–350 words (excluding title, author names, and affiliations)
- Language: Russian, Kazakh, or English
- The preferred presentation format must be indicated (poster or oral presentation)
- Abstracts without results will not be accepted
- References are not required.
- Authors are responsible for the accuracy of the submitted information.
- If submitting more than one abstract, each must be submitted separately.
- A confirmation of receipt will be sent by email.
- All further correspondence will be directed only to the submitting author.
- Studies involving human or animal subjects must have appropriate ethical approval;
- Conflicts of interest must be disclosed at the time of submission.

- Keywords — 4–6 keywords listed after the abstract text.
All presentations will be delivered in person only.

- Duration: 15 minutes (including Q&A).
- Format: Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt/.pptx).
- Slides should be clear, concise, and visually accessible (readable fonts, high contrast).
- Presentations may be delivered in Russian, Kazakh, or English.
- Language: Russian, Kazakh, or English.
- Maximum size: A0 (0.84 × 1.19 m), portrait orientation.
- Text should be minimal and clearly readable (recommended font size ≥16).
- Use graphs, charts, and/or tables where appropriate.
- Content should follow a logical structure.
- Posters will be displayed in an open area for interaction with attendees.
- Authors are responsible for printing their poster and placing it in the designated area one day before the conference or during registration.

During the review process, the Scientific Committee may recommend a change in the submitted presentation format (oral or poster) based on the quality of the submission and to ensure a balanced conference programme.The presenting author will be informed of any proposed change at the acceptance stage and may accept or decline it.Acceptance decisions are based on originality, scientific merit, and relevance to the conference theme. The decision of the Scientific Committee is final.

Awards for the Best Conference Presentations
We are pleased to announce two presentation awards recognizing outstanding contributions from conference participants:
- Best Poster Presentation Award: Awarded to the presenter of the poster demonstrating the highest overall quality in scientific content, originality, clarity of presentation, and visual design.
- Best Oral Presentation Award: Awarded to the presenter of the oral presentation demonstrating excellence in scientific content, originality, clarity, delivery, and ability to communicate the key findings effectively.
All eligible presenters will be evaluated by the Conference Scientific Committee.
Award winners will be announced during the closing ceremony.
Prof. Susanne Kae, PhD
Susanne Kaae is a trained pharmacist, Professor in Social Pharmacy and Head of the WHO Collaboration Center for Research and Training in the Patient Perspective on Medicines Use. Her area covers qualitative methods to improve patient outcomes of medicines. One line of work is research activities to support reduction of AMR in eastern Europe and central Asia, through development of
- a research protocol to explore daily behaviors of antibiotic use among general practitioners, pharmacists and patients, which have been used in 13 European countries; and
- a novel survey instrument for measuring the type and extent of activities to enforce the prohibition on antibiotics being sold without prescription.
Prof. Sonja Löfmark, PhD
PhD microbiologist/analyst at the Unit for Antibiotics and Infection Control, the Public Health Agency of Sweden, Solna, Sweden. Focus of work include international collaboration projects and networks, and contributing to strengthening countries in their national and local work on AMR, including promoting data driven decisions and actions. Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for AMR Containment. The centre also provide support to WHO in the implementation of the Global Action Plan and the European Roadmap on AMR.
Prof. Stephan Stenmark, MD, PhD
MD,PhD, Specialist in infectious diseases. Active in Strama, the Swedish work against AMR, on local, regional and national level for more than 20 years. Chair of national Strama 2015-2020. Senior consultant at the Unit for Antibiotics and Infection Control, and Deputy State Epidemiologist at the Public Health Agency of Sweden, Solna, Sweden. Responsibilities include work against AMR and strengthening IPC in Sweden and in other countries through international collaboration projects and networks.
Prof. Hakan Erdem, MD
Professor Hakan Erdem is a specialist in Infectious Diseases for three
decades of clinical, academic, and research experience. He graduated from GATA
Medical Faculty in 1993 and began his medical career as a general practitioner
before commencing fellowship training in Infectious Diseases and Clinical
Microbiology in 1996. He completed his fellowship at GATA Haydarpaşa Training
Hospital, Istanbul, in 2000.
Professor Erdem was appointed Assistant Professor in 2003, promoted to
Associate Professor in 2006, and became Full Professor in 2015. He is currently
based at the Health Sciences University, Gülhane School of Medicine, Ankara,
Türkiye.
His clinical and research interests include intensive care unit and community-
acquired infections, zoonotic diseases, and international multicenter clinical
research. He is the founder and lead coordinator of the Infectious Diseases
International Research Initiative (ID-IRI), a global collaborative clinical research
platform established in 2008, and is widely recognized for his contributions to
international infectious diseases research.
